“STATE OF CALAMITY”

On Wednesday, September 9, 2009, President Colom declared a “State of Calamity” in Guatemala due to food shortages.  Knowing that God can use every situation for His glory the challenge is before us to be His agents.

God has allowed them to open a Christian middle school providing educational opportunities not previously available.  Hugo’s background in civil engineering has been put to use in community development.  Amistad Foundation, through many of you, has been a part of building the first bathrooms in the village.  Hugo and Susana have provided adult literacy classes, teaching reading and presenting Bibles as a graduation gift for those previously unable to read God’s word for themselves.  Through the school and “Backyard Bible School” activities, God is opening doors and hearts.  Now God is opening a door before you and I . . .

DID YOU KNOW . . .

  • According to Unicef, almost half of Guatemala’s children are chronically malnourished – the sixth worst performance in the world.  The incidence of stunting, a common indicator of chronic malnutrition, is twice in Guatemala what it is in Haiti.
  • In some regions of Guatemala, malnutrition levels top 90%, among the very highest rate in the world.
  • 54,564 rural families have lost their corn and bean harvests due to prolonged drought.

NOW THAT YOU KNOW . . .

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

$100.00 will feed a family in the village for one month.  This amount will provide 150 pounds of corn, 60 pounds of beans, 1 gallon of cooking oil, and 25 pounds of sugar; plus, each family will be provided fresh chicken once a week.  No money is given, only food.

$2.00 will provide a nutritional supplement (Incaparina) for one child 10 years old or younger every day for one month.

$.50 per child will provide protection against parasites.  One pill administered once a month can protect against debilitating, sometimes deadly, diseases.
